ABOUT

GEGERBOYO is an art collective consisting of Enka Komariah, Prihatmoko Moki, and Anjali Nayenggita. It was established in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in June 2017. Former members of Gegerboyo are Vendy Methodos (2017–2023), Dian Suci (2017–2022), and Ipeh Nur (2019– 2022).

The name “GEGERBOYO” is taken from a hill on the slopes of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta. This hill has a shape that resembles the back of a crocodile. In Javanese, Geger Boyo means “crocodile’s back” (“Geger” meaning back, and “Boyo” meaning crocodile). The hill also served as a natural shield, protecting nearby communities from eruptions and hot clouds from Mount Merapi until 2010, when it was destroyed by a massive lava flow that it could no longer withstand.

GEGERBOYO draws inspiration from Indonesian, particularly Javanese, cultural traditions and their interaction with urban culture and contemporary socio-political issues. Their working method resembles the traditional Javanese “Ketoprak” performance, in which members respond to one another within a jointly determined theme. In its early years, GEGERBOYO focused heavily on murals, but over time the collective has expanded into other artistic forms such as wayang (shadow puppet), painting, batik, and art installation.
